I can't write Day 1 because I already failed and didn't blog yesterday. Guess this is harder than I thought (actually that's not true, I expected it to be hard).
I have to say that so far I'm enjoying Brain and Behaviour (B&B) more than the other topics we have covered in medical school so far. I'm not particularly surprised, considering that neurology is one of the few reasons I went into medical school in the first place.
They did a nice job of easing us into this part of the program. Yesterday we started with a standard one hour introduction to the course lecture, followed by two hours of five short presentations to get us interested in B&B by showing us clinical applications, and then just two real lectures in the afternoon.
The five clinical presentations were actually pretty cool. One in particular was about a type of functional neurosurgery called Deep Brain Stimulation, which I had heard a bit about before, but didn't know much about.
Seeing videos of people with Parkinson's, dystonia, and other movement disorders go from having tremors that significantly affect their quality of life to a significant reduction in tremors was amazing. Super, super cool.
Last night I actually went through my lab manually pretty thoroughly to prepare for my first neuroanatomy lab today. We got to handle real human brains and learn the basic surface anatomy of the brain. Again, pretty cool stuff.
Unfortunately, today after class was a fail. Finished at 12pm, was looking promising, and ended up not being productive. Oh well, got to try again tomorrow.
But maybe not all is lost. Going to try and get some studying done tonight.
Tomorrow's going to be a good day though. Only half a day of real lecture, and then our community health course in the afternoon. Oh, and more importantly, get to meet up for lunch with two of my friends from my undergrad lab, so should be some good times.
